CHARACTER INFO

Character Name:
Rokujou Miharu
Canon: Nabari No Ou
Point taken from canon: Chapter 44, right before Yoite shows up
Age: 14
Gender: Male

Appearance: Miharu is a very short boy, standing at a meager 157 cm, and very skinny since he doesn’t eat much, with fairly long black hair reaching down his neck at the back and to his cheeks at the front, aside from the fringe that stops just above his green eyes. He basically looks like a completely innocent, sweet boy due to his small size and big eyes.

Generally, he’s seen with a completely blank expression on his face that shows complete indifference to anything around him and his movements are slow and minimal and his posture reflecting how he just doesn’t care. He changes his clothing but it’s never anything spectacular and he probably just throws on the first things he see when he doesn’t wear the school uniform.

He’ll show up in Kannagara like so

Background: Here, though it’s incomplete so writing up the rest:

While Miharu and Yoite try to escape Kairoushuu, Yoite has already reached his very limit and he starts crumbling. He knows he’s going to die, so he and Miharu take a moment to rest and talk while they wait. Eventually, his whole body turns into ashe in Miharu’s arms. And this leads to the Shinrabanshou activating and finally fulfilling Yoite’s wish; he’s erased and Miharu loses his consciousness.

When he comes to, he and everyone else have forgotten about Yoite. But it wasn’t quite complete, and everyone knows for sure that there is something they’re forgetting or that there’s someone they’re searching for, but they can never think of what it is. They just know something is missing. This leaves a hole in Miharu’s very being, but it’s somewhat filled by a kitten that they name Yoite. And Miharu moves on with his life from there and despite the emptiness left from Yoite (the human, obviously) he slowly turns into a completely different person as he works for Yukimi, photographing for his articles.

A very important part of this job of his is when he photographs a class digging for phosiles together with Hanabusa, something he ends up helping the children with. And later, Hanabusa explains to him why she likes it so much, and that it’s about uncovering the stories of something that can’t speak for themselves. That it makes you feel connected to the history of the earth.

Going back to Yoite’s hometown, and meeting one of his siblings, is something that brings Miharu more to terms with the emptiness left and more at peace with it. It changes him a lot.

Hattori, Kairoushuu’s leader, seems to have backed down from obtaining the Shinrabanshou for now and instead focuses on his political carreer and during this and Miharu living his life as a happier child, Thobari and Fuuma put their skills together with a few others to work out how to get the Shinrabanshou out of Miharu with a technique left behind by Thobari’s grandfather.

Once they have worked out how to go with it, they discover that Fuuma is working with Hattori. But they still go to try and extract the Shinrabanshou, so they move to the place where Miharu lost his parents ten years ago. There, Thobari tells Miharu what happened that day.

It turns out Thobari and his grandfather knew Miharu’s parents, and he was the only one left with the memories from the day they died. Thobari tells Miharu that the day that his parents died when people came to get the Shinrabanshou, as Asahi was the former vessel, Miharu did, in fact, die too. Thobari had been the one supposed to protect Miharu, but while Thobari’s grandfather was trying to pull out the Shinrabanshou from Asahi, Miharu was killed and his face blasted off.

This, unsurprisingly, made the Shinrabanshou awaken in Asahi and she used its power to recreate Miharu’s face and thus save his life. Resurrecting someone is something of an unforgivable sin.

Thobari’s grandfather was killed next and Thobari was told to use the technique to extract the Shinrabanshou, the Zekuu. However, Asahi stopped him, and it backfired and the Shinrabanshou was instead transferred to Miharu. And that killed Asahi. While Thobari was fighting to protect Miharu, the Shinrabanshou awakened once again, affected by Asahi’s soul, and erased any memory from that time.

…and that’s as far as the series is scanlated online.

Personality: Most of the time, Miharu seems to be completely indifferent to his surroundings to the point that it gets amusing, and it has probably grown to be an honest part of his personality but that’s not how he was at first. In fact, it started with his parents dying and that was his way of dealing with it, of locking things up and just pretending that he doesn’t care about anything.

This isn’t always a bad thing. Taunt him, mock him, try to get a rise out of him all you want, it’s not going to gain any results. In fact, while he’s at ignoring your attempts, he’ll just return the favour with the same deadpan, both in voice and expression, leaving you either dumbfounded, pissed off or miserable, depending all on you of course. Unless you just don’t care yourself. But no matter your reaction, he’s not going to care about that. He has been called a devil several times due to how relentlessly he smacks you down if he needs to for whatever reason, either to get you to do something or to leave him alone. His indifference has a nasty bite to it.

Aside from that, he’s also aware of his small size and sweet looks, and uses them to his advantage so that he can put in minimal effort in doing anything. He just doesn’t give enough of a damn to do it himself or to fight too hard to do it, you see.

That’s not to say he doesn’t care about anything at all, of course. At the very beginning of the series it was definitely much more so, but finding out what kind of power he has inside of him and the events that occures after that has left him caring for a number of things, because he has seen that there are things worth caring for. Such as Yoite, Yukimi, Raimei, Kouichi, and their well-being, and the like.

But above all else, he cares for Yoite. Yoite is a very big and important part of Miharu’s life and he is who Miharu first and foremost wants to help, in whatever way he can. But he also feels a connection to Yoite that he hasn’t felt with anyone else so even while he wants to help, he also wants Yoite to stay with him. This is something rather torturous, because Yoite wants to be erased and Miharu wants to grant this wish for Yoite’s sake, but a great part of him wants Yoite to stay with him and to live so that they can be happy together.

Beneath the indifference and the mischieviousness and whatever front Miharu puts up is a troubled, torn and hurting child. There are no doubt moments when he is truly happy, especially around Yoite, Yukimi and his friends, but a lot of the time there’s heavy things on his mind. Such as the Shinrabanshou and if he can really get rid of it or if he wants to get rid of it, or should. But he knows he doesn’t want to let it go until he has helped Yoite, or until Yoite says he no longer wants that wish fulfilled.

But there is also the fact that several other people he cares for don’t want him to use the Shinrabanshou, so this is a rather constant concern. Even if he still intends to use it - it is for Yoite after all - it doesn’t make him feel so great about it. On top of that, he’s worried about what using it would do and if he’s strong enough, and the fact that the longer he has it the longer he puts his loved ones in danger by having it. But he needs it.

He tells himself that what he’s doing is right and he does mostly believe it - it is what he wants and what Yoite wants and he cares too much for Yoite not to do it - but on some level he is also unsure of that. And together with that he’s unsure of how to do it and how to get strong enough and how do it in time most importantly because Yoite has a time limit.

Indifference makes it easier to carry all of this around because the less things he cares for the less burdens are added to the pile. But the indifference is still less than it was when he started off because then he really didn’t care about anything, but now he does. And in a lot of ways that feels good too, so he’s definitely not entirely miserable at all. He just has a lot on his mind and it gets suffocating sometimes.

But as long as there’s someone there to pull him out of it, he’ll be alright. And there are a lot of people capable of making him happy.

Abilities/Strengths: Aside from the Shinrabanshou, which Miharu isn’t really capable of using and shouldn’t use, he has the ability to quickly and efficiently pick up ninja techniques. Of course, it doesn’t go in the blink of an eye but when he first starts training Thobari is surprised by how quickly he learns, and on his own; this is where you first see that he actually cares for something; that was because he had been practicing outside of the lessons, on his own.

He is very, very skilled at using his small size and cute face to manipulate people. Few people would be able to resist this face.

But he doesn’t only use his looks either; he’s very good at just using the right words to get people to do what needs to be done.

Despite his struggles, Miharu is set on fulfilling his goals and completing what he promised to do. He will not back down because it scares him, and not only because he probably doesn’t have any real choice, but because he’s simply not that kind. As indifferent as he seems, he makes his own choices and he goes through with them, and doesn’t make excuses.

He is stubborn and determined. If he runs into obstacles, he’ll do his best to overcome them, and he’s not the kind to give up. Despite moments where he doubts things or when he’s unsure of what to do, he’s still determined to somehow accomplish what he wants or what he has promised. He never intends to break a promise.

His mask of indifference is in fact quite a great defense. It’s very easy for him to keep it up so even through the toughest of things he can seem to be pulling through, which could for example throw an enemy off-balance.

Weaknesses: He has a very frail build and he doesn’t do anything to help this. He is used to it and it doesn’t hinder him from doing things, generally (he can just get others to do things he can’t with the help of his small size), and it does have its pros, but it does mean he really isn’t physically strong. Not only due to his small size either; he doesn’t work out or anything.

He doesn’t have control over Shinrabanshou, and this could be very dangerous due to its immense power. It could have great effect on surroundings, as well as tear on his body.

If you get through the mask of indifference to Miharu’s insecurity about things you can break him. You can poke and prod at his uncertainties until he starts doubting things even more and while he’s likely to recover from it, it’s still there.

Defining Quote(s):

Chapter 4, page 12 - 13:
Miharu: Listen to me, Kumohira-sensei.
Thobari: No is no, no matter what you say!
Miharu. *Whispers in his ear* The destination of this train might be hell.
[And Thobari is left pretty out of it due to his phobia for public transport.
Miharu: Destination Fuuma!
Kouichi and Raimei: ’Demon…’

Chapter 10, page 18:
”You’re indifferent. Are you not going to save anyone? Is there no one important to you? Without loving. Is that your principle, Rokujou Miharu?” ~ Yoite

Chapter 10, page 23:
”That screaming man is not yet in despair. You are also like that… But even so… you are more dead than I am.” ~ Yoite

Chapter 34, page 24 - 25:
’I don’t know anything about Yoite. I don’t know why he wants to erase his existence. I felt that if I asked, the thin thread between us would be cut. So I avoided it. But right now—I really want to know. You resembled being lonely. And kind, as well as in pain. You resembled knowing that feeling you were in pain was foolish. Your blood also resembled being warm.’ ”You’re not a nuisance of a reaper. You’re another me.” ~ Miharu about and to Yoite

Action Writing Sample: --ah…

[Eyes that were widened only a moment later squeezes shut abruptly at the sudden light and black hair flows with the movement as Miharu rapidly shakes his head. Wait just a moment…

Where is he?

He opens his eyes again and shifts where he’s suddenly kneeling on soft grass and not the floor in Hattori’s residence, his eyes taking in the surroundings. It’s… really pretty. But how…? He exhales shakily, his hand lifting slowly to rub along his throat were Hattori’s fingers had just been, and he swallows.

It’s a relief to be gone from that place but--

Hattori’s words… What is he supposed to think about them? He doesn’t… agree with them but… still… They… scare him.

As he moves to get onto his feet, his hand covers the Hitomi and he pauses.]

Eh?

[The feed cuts off when he grabs the device and picks it up.]

Third Person Writing Sample: It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Even if some people may think it’s odd, it’s really simple when it comes down to it. If anyone wonders how it works, if anyone wonders why Miharu cares, why he puts all that effort in for someone who thinks he’s so useless, for someone like Yoite… If someone wonders how Miharu came to really aim for it because he wants to…

It’s simple.

It’s Yoite.

There’s no difference from how Miharu cares about Raimei and Kouichi and want them to be happy as much as he wants Yoite to be happy… But even so, Yoite feels more important because… he thinks Yoite is like him, no matter what anyone says.

Even if Hattori said that Yoite is destined to die and that there’s no use helping him… what does it matter? What does it matter what he’s ”destined” for? Yoite is Yoite, and Yoite is safe, Yoite is warm, Yoite is kind, Yoite is tall, and Yoite has done a lot of cold things, he has killed, but he’s… Yoite. And Miharu… Miharu loves Yoite for Yoite.

And all he needs to know is that Yoite is here, his embrace is comfortable and the sound of his heartbeat is calming and it’s where Miharu belongs, where he wants to be. Right here. With Yoite. And he really needs to be here now, when he has been gone for so long, even if there are people that aren’t here that he would like to have here, like Raimei and Kouichi… He needs to be here for as long as Yoite is; he owes him that much after this time. And he doesn’t mind at all, because there’s no Hattori here, no Kairoushuu, nothing to tear them apart. And maybe he should stop pressing his face into Yoite’s coat, and stop clenching it in his hands but…

As long as Yoite doesn’t mind, he thinks he’ll stay like that. It makes him happy, it further adds to the knowledge that nothing can take him away from it, from this home. For as long as Yoite accepts it, he can stay. And he will stay, he must, but not only because he must, but because he wants to.

”I’m sorry,” he speaks into the clothe. ”I’ll stay this time. For Yoite.”

Even if he knows he can’t hold that promise, he still says it. He can’t not. Because…

It’s for Yoite.
